Welcome Note: Dr. Shubhi from Medical Learning Hub welcomed the esteemed speaker, Dr Harish NL and Dr. Haritha Madigubba along with the participants.
Module 1: MDR infection risks in immunocompromised cancer patients- Dr Harish NL, Consultant Surgical Oncologist at Continental Hospital, Hyderabad.Key Points covered in the session were:
MDROs (Multidrug-Resistant Organisms):
Resistant to multiple antibiotics; increase mortality, hospital stays, and costs.
Infection vs. Colonization: Symptoms determine treatment.
Risk Factors:
Risk Factors by Cancer Types:
Solid tumors (e.g., colon, hepatobiliary) → bacterial infections.
Hematologic cancers (e.g., leukemia, lymphoma) → fungal/viral infections.
Clinical Syndromes:
Skin: Pseudomonas (ecthyma gangrenosum), Candida.
Gut: C. difficile, neutropenic enterocolitis.
Lungs: Aspergillus (halo sign on CT).
CNS: Cryptococcal meningitis (lymphoma patients).
Treatment Strategies:
Antibiotics: Cover Gram-negative & Gram-positive bacteria.
Antifungals: Voriconazole, liposomal amphotericin B.
Antivirals: Ganciclovir for CMV; lamivudine for HBV.
Prevention:
Prophylaxis: Antibiotics (e.g., quinolones), antifungals (e.g., posaconazole).
Vaccines: Inactivated (flu, pneumococcal); avoid live vaccines.
Infection Control: Hand hygiene, sterile food, laminar airflow.
Module 2: Infection Control and Surveillance for Onco care- Dr Haritha Madigubba, Consultant Microbiologist and Infection Control Officer at Sindhu Hospitals, Hyderabad. Key Points covered in the session were:
High Infection Risk: Immunocompromised patients, device use (biofilms), antibiotics, understaffing.
Prevention Measures:
Standard Precautions: Hand hygiene, PPE, safe sharps handling.
Transmission-Based: Isolation for MRSA (contact), masks for flu (droplet), N95 for TB (airborne).
Environmental Controls:
3-foot bed spacing, frequent disinfection (floors 3–4× daily), terminal cleaning with chlorine.
Clean top-to-bottom, avoid double-dipping mops.
Device Infections (Bundles):
CAUTI: Sterile catheter insertion, closed drainage, timely removal.
CLABSI: Subclavian insertion, chlorhexidine prep, sterile dressings.
VAP: Elevate head (30–45°), oral care.
Transplant Unit Protocols:
Monitoring Cleanliness:
Q&A Session: Participants actively engaged in a Q&A session moderated by Dr.Shubhi, whereDr Harish NL and Dr. Haritha Madigubba, addressed queries and shared expert insights.
Closing Remarks: Dr. Shubhi concluded the session with a vote of thanks, appreciating the speaker and participants for their valuable contributions.
We wish you a great learning experience!
