Session Overview: Dr. Dhara Shah, Head of Medical Affairs, Viatris, warmly welcomed the distinguished speakers Prof. Malcom Richardson, Prof. Arunaloke Chakrabarti, and Dr. Parikshit Prayag along with the esteemed panelists and participants. The CME focused on addressing challenges in diagnosing and managing mucormycosis and other rare invasive fungal infections (IFIs). The sessions provided a deep dive into antifungal resistance, diagnostic strategies, and treatment options for a range of fungal infections.
Module 1: Unboxing – Painting the Landscape of Mucor and Other Rare IFIs : Speaker: Prof. Malcom Richardson, Consultant Clinical Scientist, Medical Mycology, Mycology Reference Centre, Manchester Prof. Richardson delivered a comprehensive session, shedding light on the following key topics:
Mucormycosis
Diversity of Mucorales in different soil types.
Clinical forms of mucormycosis in India and associated risk factors.
Populations at increased risk and mortality rates for mucormycosis in India.
Advances in mucormycosis diagnosis, including PCR and lateral flow devices.
Histoplasmosis
Cryptococcosis
Fusariosis
Fusarium infections, including pediatric cases and global distribution.
Recommendations for diagnosis and treatment, emphasizing histopathological insights.
Module 2: Centrifuge 1 – Unusual in the Usuals (Polling with Panel Discussion) , Facilitator: Prof. Arunaloke Chakrabarti , Key points in Panel Discussion included:
Identification and management of rare Candida species such as Candida auris and Candida haemulonii.
Diagnostic and treatment strategies for cryptic aspergillosis and CNS Aspergillus infections.
Emerging antifungals and their role in treating resistant fungal species.
Aspergillus species-specific resistance patterns and treatment insights.
Misdiagnosed fungal infections mimicking asthma, COPD, or TB.
Module 3: Centrifuge 2 – Churning the Rare in the Rare (Polling with Panel Discussion), Facilitator: Dr. Parikshit Prayag, Key points in Panel Discussion included:
Rare Mucor species and their antifungal susceptibility/resistance patterns.
Challenges in distinguishing Mucor species microscopically from other fungal infections.
Risk factors beyond COVID-19 for IFIs.
Secondary prophylaxis and treatment durations for mucormycosis.
Advances in managing cryptococcosis, histoplasmosis, and autoimmune-related IFIs.
Module 4: Question-and-Answer Session: Participants engaged in an interactive Q&A session, addressing queries related to antifungal diagnostics, resistance, and management. The panelists provided valuable insights to clarify practical challenges.
Closing Remarks and Vote of Thanks: Dr. Sunny concluded the CME by expressing gratitude to the speakers, panelists, and participants for their active involvement.
Conclusion: The CME served as an invaluable platform for learning and discussion on rare invasive fungal infections. It emphasized evidence-based strategies, emerging antifungal treatments, and the importance of advancing diagnostic capabilities to combat IFIs effectively.
We wish you a great learning experience!
